Newton Getting Started Card

The Newton Getting Started card (part 649-0020-A) is a type I PCMCIA card that was included with the first Newton MessagePad ? usually referred to as OMP, Original MessagePad and possibly the Newton MessagePad 100. The card includes three programs; Instructor, Tour and Game (CalliGrapher). The card is located in a guide booklet, which unfolds to expose a holding spot for the card.

As their names imply, Tour will show some of the features of the Newton operating system (NOS) and Instructor will guide you through some of the functions of your Newton MessagePad. The included game, CalliGrapher, is a word game where the user writes out words. A result of playing the game is the Newton will learn your writing style and recognize words more accurately in all programs.

All the programs were written for the screens of the OMP and MessagePad 100 and therefore may not function properly on 120 or higher models. Both CalliGrapher and Tour work properly on my eMate 300. Instructor fails to load displaying the error -48204.

The hardware inside the card appears to be approximately 1 MB of read-only memory. The combined size of the three programs is 878 KB, which works out to approximately 0.85 megabytes.
